GIORGI CHKHEIDZE
Having tried himself in the television industry, 23-year-old Chkheidze felt the urge to continue his search for meaning in a new professional capacity and in a new location, which happened to be the United States. New York City gave birth to Chkheidze the artist who, inspired by Donald Judd, Dan Flavin, Frank Stella and other minimalists, started seeing minimalism as the ultimate lingua franca, comprehensible and accessible to all. Between 2010 and 2017 Chkheidze created series of experimental works, utilising various media and means of expression. His practice was built around visual effects. It was at this time that the artist came up with his signature technique – applying multiple layers of acrylic paint on canvas.
Random natural and geometric shapes find their place in his works, fully embodied in minimalist compositions. Many minimalists discourage viewers from reading too much into their works, but no one could call minimalism devoid of all meaning. When working on a painting, Chkheidze tries to block the inner monologue, ‘work from the void’. ‘There is meaning but no thoughts,’ says the artist who has adopted the process of making art as a means of existence. Chkheidze looks for inspiration in the depths of his consciousness, infinity, and dark matter. At the same time, his works are free of perceptible allusions, metaphors and glaring symbolism. He leaves the viewer room for interpretation.
